This book is a richly illustrated, nonfiction photographic and narrative exploration of a single minor-league baseball season — specifically the 2013 season of the Durham Bulls.
The book brings together writers and visual artists — including photographers like Hiroshi Watanabe, Alec Soth, Hank Willis Thomas and others — who immersed themselves in the Bulls’ season, shooting all 72 home games and capturing the rhythms of life on and around the ballpark. It blends striking photography with essays and personal narratives that reflect on players, fans, staff, the atmosphere of the games, and the experience of baseball as a cultural ritual.
The project was conceived as a collaborative art documentary, not just a record of games. Several artists were chosen for their unique perspectives and encouraged to pursue what intrigued them about baseball and the Bulls’ community.
“...captures not only the atmosphere at the games and in the stadium but also the complexities of being a minor-league baseball player.” - The New Yorker
